About Duality Fitness

Our Story

Duality Fitness is a practical wellness company in Sandton, built around movement, habits, productivity, and nutrition, and it was not built from ambition. It was built from necessity.

Between its two founders there are decades of movement practice, coaching, facilitation, and study. Carlo Gomes started martial arts at five years old. Martin de Bruiyn spent years building a career while his health quietly paid the price.

Neither of them came to wellness through inspiration. They came through the kind of pain that eventually stops being ignorable. What they found, separately and then together, is that sustainable wellness is not something you achieve once. It is something you return to, with the right support and the right environment around you.

Duality is based at Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside Manor, Sandton. It was built on the systems that healed its founders, and exists to help others get there too.

Martin de Bruiyn — Co-Founder, COO/CTO, Performance & Habits Coach

About Duality Fitness

Martin de Bruiyn spent years building a career while his health quietly paid the price. He was good at performing. He was less good at sustaining. It took hitting a wall, and then stopping altogether, before he understood the difference.

His recovery from alcoholism was not the end of that chapter. It was the beginning of a different question: what is the system underneath the behaviour? Not the habit itself, but the structure that makes the habit possible, or impossible. That question became the foundation of everything he does now.

Martin came to coaching through personal training, and to facilitation through coaching. Each step forward came from recognising that the work was deeper than the surface. Personal training taught him that the body responds to consistency, not intensity. Coaching taught him that most people already know what good habits look like. What they cannot seem to do is make them stick. Facilitation taught him that the same is true for teams.

He has a principle he returns to often. Too much of even the best things becomes harmful. The people he works with are not failing because they are not trying. They are often failing because they are trying too hard, in the wrong direction, without a system that fits how they actually live.

Martin co-founded Duality Fitness with Carlo Gomes and works from Fit Café at Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside Manor, Sandton.

About duality fitness

Carlo Gomes — Co-Founder, CMO/CTO, Team Performance Coach & Tai Chi Instructor

About duality fitness

Carlo Gomes started martial arts at five years old. By his early twenties he was competing nationally in Wushu, winning gold medals while studying full time. He was midway through an architecture degree when he chose his passion over his qualification and walked away from the programme.

The sport he had given everything to passed him over for national representation. Not because of talent, but because of politics.

When the martial arts school where he was teaching demanded the majority of his income from private lessons, it was no longer sustainable. He moved into personal training full time.

For a time he stopped training altogether. His body reflected it. Years of high intensity martial arts without the internal counterbalance had accumulated into chronic back pain and postural problems that interrupted his sleep every night. He had spent years training other people’s bodies. Now he had to learn how to rebuild his own.

He studied posture correction through training interventions and began rebuilding slowly. It was during this period that Martin de Bruiyn came into his life, job shadowing Carlo while completing his own qualifications. Martin helped Carlo progress from postural rehabilitation into heavier strength work, accelerating a recovery that had already been years in the making.

That exchange became the seed of Duality Fitness. As the business grew and Fit Café opened at Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside Manor, Sandton, Carlo deepened his Tai Chi practice through various teachers, moving away from the external, performance oriented approach of his earlier years and toward the internal principles that change a body over time. He is today the youngest member of the South Africa TaijiQuan Authority and teaches Tai Chi six days a week at the park.

Carlo believes the body and mind operate as a system, and that wellness only works when it is approached that way. Most people are carrying more than they admit. The path back is slower and deeper than most expect, and more worth it than they imagine.

He is today pain free. That is the proof of the foundation.
